STUDYING FOR AN MBA

Understanding Programme Quality

When choosing an MBA programme, it’s important to consider recognised quality benchmarks. Independent accreditation bodies, academic rankings, and institutional reputation can help assess whether a programme aligns with your academic and professional goals.

What About Rankings?

Various publications release rankings of business schools and MBA programmes. However, these rankings often use different methodologies and may not reflect the full value of a course. They can be a helpful reference but should not be the sole deciding factor in programme selection.

What Is an MBA?

An MBA is a globally recognised postgraduate degree designed for individuals seeking to enhance their skills in business, management, and leadership.

MBA programmes are offered across the world, with large numbers of graduates completing their studies annually in countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and others. The UK is a prominent provider of these qualifications outside North America and has a long-established presence in international business education.

The first MBA programmes emerged in the United States in the early 20th century and expanded to Europe in the 1960s with institutions such as IESE in Spain, London Business School, and Manchester Business School.

Types of Programmes

Programmes vary in format and duration depending on the institution and country of study. Common types include:

  • Full-time: Generally two years in the USA, and between 10 months and two years in Europe.
  • Part-time: Designed to allow professionals to balance studies with employment.
  • Executive (EMBA): Targeted at experienced professionals looking to advance in senior roles.
  • Online & Distance Learning: Offers flexible study options for those unable to attend in person.

Selecting the right programme involves reviewing factors such as curriculum, delivery method, career support, and how well it aligns with your goals. Many employers support postgraduate business education as part of internal leadership development strategies.
